Obesity in Low Income Regions

Argument

Obesity is a serious epidemic that’s sweeping all across the U.S. mostly in poverty stricken areas. Low income areas don’t have the same opportunity to eat as healthy as the more well to do areas. This is mainly do to the fact that eating healthy is more expensive. In low income areas there is no demand for healthy food, simply because they can’t afford it. The people there choose the quick cheap fast food places for a meal instead of the more costly healthy foods.  If the costs of the healthy food were lowered in the low income areas then the obesity rate would be lowered as well. There are many things to increase healthy eating in these areas such as, lowering the rent of a health food store that way they could lower their prices. Also, giving tax breaks to the health food stores would result in lower food prices. Lastly, getting rid of the unhealthy food stores would force people to choose a more healthy choice.

The demand for healthy food shops in poverty stricken areas is very low due to the fact that it is so expensive. If the rent was lowered only for those stores that offer a healthier selection of food, then the stores could lower their prices making it more affordable for those who could not normally afford it. The break on the rent would be saving the store which then could allow them to charge less for the foods. This would also reduce the obesity problem as well, due to the fact that more people would be choosing the healthier options now that they can afford it.

Also, another way to reduce obesity, by increasing health food stores, is to give tax breaks to only the health food stores in these areas. The stores would have to agree to lower the price of their foods in order to receive said tax break though. If they do not lower their prices then they do not get a tax break. The lower prices would attract new customers to the stores, thus creating most business and more profit for the store. Also, the new customers would be getting healthier food for low costs. It’s a win-win situation for both the store and the consumer. Plus, it will help reduce the obesity rate by attracting those who would normally go buy cheap junk food, would now shop at the health food store.

Lowering the rate of obesity can also be reached by simply just shutting down all the junk food stores in the area. By getting rid of the fast food places in the area it would force people to choose the healthier places by default. This wouldn’t really help from an economical stand point, but it would end obesity for sure. The people would be force to buy the more expensive healthy food which would be good for their bodies, but not good for their wallets. This is not the most practical way to reduce obesity but it sure would work.

The last way to effectively reduce the obesity problem is to combine all three ideas into one action. By combining reduced rent, tax breaks and eliminating junk food places the obesity problem would stop dead in its tracks. The reduced rent payments and the tax breaks would be given to only those health food stores that agree to lower their prices substantially. Also the elimination of the junk food stores would leave only the healthy food stores left and with the new lowered more affordable prices the people can shop there with no worries. The people in these low income areas could now afford to eat health, which will in turn reduce the obesity rate.

The obesity rate in the low income areas is very high and needs to be lowered. Those are just a few of the many ways that could help reduce it. The most effective way to reduce it would be to combine all three plans into one elaborate plan. This elaborate plan would ultimately end the obesity problem for ever.

Ethnography

I have been a bus boy at a very prestigious restaurant, LeBaron Hills, for roughly 3 years now. I have a pretty good understanding of how food is prepared, and of who prepares it. In all the movies and shows on TV, the cooks are presented as mean angry people who yell at everyone for the simplest of mistakes. However this is not really the case, the cooks I work with are always happy and fooling around. They do get angry sometimes, but for the most part they are happy-go-lucky. Cooks in real life are nothing like those depicted in movies and TV shows.

One example of the cooks not being mean jerks was when all the waitresses were on their break smoking cigarettes outside, and the head chef snuck out side and scared them all. He had it all plan out too. When I showed up for work the first thing the chef said was “we’re gonna prank the waitresses tonight!” I thought he was just saying that but as the night progressed I overheard bits and pieces of his plan to scare them. He was going to “the bathroom” right before their break, but he was actually going to go hide outside and wait for them. He told everyone except for the waitresses his plan besides the waitresses, so everyone knew what was going to happen but them. Needless to say his plan worked flawlessly, and he got them pretty good. This is just an example to show how not all chefs are up tight and mean.

On some occasions though, the cooks can get a bit mean and edgy. For example, one night the restaurant was extremely busy. Every table was full, and there were people waiting to be seated. So the cooks were working extra had to keep up with all the orders, but the waitresses were slacking and food was backing up in the window, which is where the cooked food is place for the waitresses to pick up, so the cooks had no place to put the cooked food. At first It didn’t really bother the cooks but then as the waitresses took longer and longer and started to not pay attention, the cooks got angrier. While I was cleaning off a tray off dirty plates the cooks yelled at me to carry trays of food out to people, even though it is not my job. When I dropped off the food the waitresses rush back to get the rest of the food and I went into the kitchen to help out. All the cooks were screaming at the waitresses and swearing and slamming things. They were so mad, and the waitresses were firing right back with insults. They were mostly just swearing at each other. It was a very busy night and the waitresses were slacking, so it is understandable the cooks got mad. It was a rare occasion for the cooks to get mad, that was one of the few times I've ever seen them mad.

The cooks like to have fun while they work. There was one time the cooks and the dish washers had a little mini food fight. It started when a dish washer was texting while I was cleaning off a tray of dirty dishes and the cook working the salad stations saw this and he threw a cherry tomato at him. The dishwasher then threw a piece of food, which was on one of the plates I was cleaning, at the cook and then it was on! The cooks just unloaded in the dishwashers. The dishwashers had the disadvantage of being out numbered 2 to 6 and they didn’t have food to throw besides what was left on my tray. So they just got buried in food the cooks were throwing lettuce and tomatoes at the dishwashers, and I got hit a couple of times by accident, but it was all in fun. Everyone was laughing and having a good time. It only lasted about 30 seconds but it just shows that cooks aren’t always uptight, and that they know how to have fun even while at work.

When cooks are shown on TV they are always made out to be mean, but that is clearly not the case. From my experiences I would say the exact opposite of that; they are funny and easy going for the most part. However, they do have their moments of being mean but everyone gets mean once in a while. They are over all very nice and fun to be around.

Memoir story (ramen noodles)

Have you ever tried to make “ramen noodles”? It’s an easy three step process to cook. Anyone who can read directions can make them. If you can’t read then it’s still feasible because they have pictures of the three steps to make it even easier than it already is. It is a very simple meal to make, so I thought it would be easy for me to make all by myself one. I had never cooked a meal all by myself before, so I was up for the challenge.

I was about 12 when I decide to face my hunger head on, and cook myself dinner. I grew up in a household were my parents did everything for me. They cooked dinner every night for me, but that night I wanted to be independent and make my own dinner. I thought I would pick something nice and easy to make, and “what’s easier than ramen noodles” I thought. So decided this would be a good first meal to cook, there is no way I could mess it up. I was wrong. I messed it up big time.

I gave the directions a quick read and thought it was easy enough to remember. I measured out 2 cups of water like it was now big deal, and poured it in to the pot. So far, so good. Then, I poured the noodles in too the pot, and add the seasoning. Then I turned on the stove. I thought I was doing a pretty good job for my first time cooking. I left the stove on for three minutes, stirring the noodle every now and then, like the directions said. After the three minutes were up it was time to taste my magnificent meal. I poured the noodles into a bowl, and I noticed that the water wasn’t hot at all, it was luke warm. I just thought that the people, that wrote the directions, timed it so perfectly that the noodles would ready to eat right away, and you didn’t have to wait for it to cool down. I was wrong. When I took my first sip I immediately spit it out. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever tasted. I've had ramen noodles before so I knew what it was supposed to taste like. What I had concocted tasted nothing like regular ramen.

I wondered what went wrong. I thought maybe it was the water, but no the water was fine. I couldn’t figure out what went wrong. After some time of deep thought I figured I check the direction to see if by some chance I had messed up. I quickly noticed I messed up big time. Instead of adding everything at once, I was supposed to boil the water first. Then add the noodles and cook for three minutes while stirring occasionally. Then after the three minutes remove the pot from the stove and then add the seasoning.

It was the first meal I had ever made myself. I was being independent and thought I knew how to do everything, but I didn’t. I should have read the directions more thoroughly. It is very important to read the directions, especially when it comes to cooking food.

My hometown was a wonderful (or choose your own adjective) place to grow up.
- My hometown was an amazing place to grow up, because the whole town would gather up every week to have a fair with all sorts of games and shows.

Laci had a rather eccentric style.
-Laci's colthing choice is rather bizarre, she comes into to class with everyday wearing the same old pair of brightly colored parachute pants and a torn jean jacket on.
Mr. Brown is the worst teacher I’ve ever had.
- Mr. Brown is the worst teacher ever because he never teaches from the book, just his own experiences.

The room seemed very institutional.
- This room is so bland, its a milky white color with no windows and a single light.

Writer’s Autobiography

I have never considered myself a good writer. I don't like to write, so I never put anytime into my writing. I always have run-ons in my works too. I just don't enjoy writing at all it is just awful, unless its about a topic that  I really am interested in. But that never really happens.

My Themes

The theme that I want to do is Food. This is a good topic for me because I enjoy food. It seems like and easy topic for me. I always watch the food network and I work in a restaurant. I'm always around food and I feel like its a relate-able topic for me. Other topics that I could work with are the Technology theme and the Environment and Nature theme because I can relate to these topics too. I'm always surrounded by technology whether it be a cell phone or an iPod they are always by my side. Nature is also a good topic because I love being outside. I go rock climbing with my friends from time to time too. I feel like any of these 3 themes would be good for me.

Food ad

I think this is a really good advertisement for McDonalds. Its a very simple ad but the purpose is clear. McDonalds is now open all day and all night. When you first see this ad it looks like a crescent moon, but as you look at it more carefully you notice its not a moon but a hamburger bun. The light on the bun creates the look of a moon and the seed are like the craters on the moon. The ad makes the bun look like a moon to show that they are now open 24/7. The caption beside the bun-moon says "Open 24 hours" just to clear up any confusion about the ad.

This ad is pretty much targeted to anyone and everyone. But also, it could be specifically targeted to those late night eatters. The people that have to work late into the night and don't have where to go out to eat, they now have McDonalds at the ready for them. I know I certainly took advantage of the open 24/7 deal.
